RINGING IN THE NEW: HOW CELL PHONE TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING
Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, executive vice president of QUALCOMM and group president of QUALCOMM Wireless & Internet Group, will talk about how the cellular phone industry worldwide has changed with each technical innovation. He will focus on the latest advances that are enabling phone companies and cell phone makers to provide more services than just simple
voice communication.
For example, according to Jacobs, the new 3G CDMA (third-generation code division multiple access) technology developed by QUALCOMM will hasten the spread of high-resolution displays and cameras, position location, and embedded multimedia functionality in cell phones.
Jacobs oversees QUALCOMM Internet Services, QUALCOMM Technology Licensing, QUALCOMM Wireless Business Solutions and QUALCOMM Digital Media. He started and ran QUALCOMM's Consumer Products division, which had the second-highest sales of digital cellular telephones in the United States at the time of its sale to Kyocera Corporation.
Jacobs holds over 25 patents in the area of wireless technology and devices. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from UC Berkeley in 1989.
